Sustainability is an increasingly important issue for the timber industry, as balancing climate change and the economy depends to a large extent on how we use forest resources. Research shows that wood-based materials in construction and interior design are an environmentally friendly and resource-efficient choice if done right.
The sustainability of the timber industry is based on three key elements: ecological balance, economic sustainability and social responsibility. Ecological balance starts with responsibly managed forests to ensure the conservation of biodiversity. For 15 years, we have been committed to sustainable forest management and transparency in our supply chains. In 2024, nearly 91% of the timber supplied to us will be covered by various sustainable forest management programme certificates. Our production facilities hold both FSC and PEFC certification.

Being sustainable also means that we have thought through what happens to the wood waste we generate in our production process. Both sawdust and wood chips are valuable today as a raw material for a pellet producer or a district heating provider - the wood waste from our production process keeps homes warm and cosy.
The timber industry must also be profitable, i.e. economically sustainable. This is the only way to support local communities by creating jobs close to home, and to contribute to sports, culture and education. Sport, and youth sport in particular, has been an important area for us to help with advice and support. Today, Ecobirch is the largest supporter of youth sailing competitions in Pärnu. We support art, craft and technology lessons for students in Pärnu and Pärnumaa with wooden materials.
Social responsibility includes, among other things, ensuring the rights and well-being of workers. Our 150 employees are our greatest asset, contributing every day to a work process that requires specific skills and knowledge. We attach great importance to the health and well-being of our employees, which is why safe and healthy work is one of our priorities. We have set up a Work Environment Council, to which our employees have elected their representatives and which deals with health and safety issues on an ongoing basis.
